Coconut oil has become increasingly popular over the past few years. Coconut oil was one of those versatile oils that has just as much potential in your regular skincare routine as it does in your kitchen. It is praised as a useful cooking oil and as a decorative elixir.
When it comes to cooking, the health benefits of coconut oil have always been a matter of debate, which is what makes it a controversial cooking oil. However, a number of nutrition experts recommend it because of its ketogenic properties. In fact, some experts claim that coconut oil promotes fat burning, improves metabolism, lowers cholesterol, and can heal the gut. Not only that, it is packed with antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties among a number of other benefits. There are so many things you can use coconut oil for, but here are just a few uses for coconut oil that you may not have thought of:
1. Deep condition
In addition to its skin-loving properties, coconut oil is also great at replenishing dry skin with much-needed moisture. This tropical oil helps to hydrate dry skin by keeping it hydrated and supporting the skin barrier. Try applying it after showering to lock in some of the water and keep your skin hydrated.
2. Create a DIY hair mask.
Soften strands with a spa hair mask. Mix 3 to 5 tablespoons of organic refined coconut oil (liquid) with 20 drops of rosemary oil. Apply to the hair with massaging movements and cover with a shower cap. Leave on for 30 to 60 minutes, then shampoo.
3. Tame frizz.
If you are struggling to tame your mane, coconut oil can definitely help. Rub some coconut oil between your fingertips and work through particularly frizzy areas to leave your hair looking smooth and polished. As an alternative to regular oil, you can also use anti-frizz serums that contain coconut oil to nourish and strengthen your hair.
4. Add shine.
Smooth a small amount of organic coconut oil through the ends of your hair to add some shine if you have dark hair. Remember that a smudge will work for you - more than that can make your hair look greasy.
5. Minimize dandruff
Coconut oil can help reduce yeast levels on the skin that cause the inflammation, flaking, and itching associated with dandruff. Try minimizing the problem with ultra-moisturizing coconut oil: Heat 2-3 tablespoons of oil on the stove over low heat. As soon as it becomes liquid, immediately remove it from the stove so that it does not become too hot. Then massage the oil into the scalp. If you have any oil left, you can use it to coat the rest of your hair. Let the oil sit on your scalp for 30 minutes and then wash it off with shampoo.
6. Use as a first step face wash.
Because coconut oil is a natural antibacterial, antifungal, and moisturizer, many women also swear by using it as a nighttime facial moisturizer. Try the oil cleansing method: simply rub the oil in circular motions all over your face and neck, giving yourself a gentle massage as you go. When you're done, wash your face with your favourite gentle cleanser to make sure all the residue is washed away.
7. Nourish dry cuticles.
Applying coconut oil to the cuticles and skin around the nails can provide much-needed moisture to this often-overlooked part of the body. Benefit? You will get rid of cracked skin, moisturize brittle nails and nails will not hang.
8. Treat your feet.
An athlete's foot is a common fungal infection caused by sweaty feet. Coconut oil can help soothe infection and flaky skin. After you apply the athlete's foot treatment, cover it with a layer of organic coconut oil and cover it with cotton socks. It also works wonders for cracked heels.
9. Soothe eczema
Coconut oil can also be used as a natural treatment option for those suffering from eczema, a complex of skin problems that result in red, itchy, and swollen skin. One small study found that eczema patients (especially those with atopic dermatitis) who applied coconut oil to their skin twice a day experienced a reduction in staphylococcus bacteria on their skin, dryness, chafing, redness, and thickening of the skin from scratches. Apply a light layer of coconut oil to the affected area twice a day to soothe eczema.
10. Use for cleaning make-up brushes
It is very important to keep your makeup brushes clean. Coconut oil is perfect for dissolving dirt and grime that can otherwise stick to makeup brushes. Massage the coconut oil onto the brush head, then swirl the brush on a tissue or in water until you start to see the dirt coming away. After cleaning, wash the brush again and let it dry.
