Ginger is also known as Adrak in India. Ginger is a plant found in Southeast Asia countries like china, japan and India. The ginger spice comes from the roots of the plant Zingiberaceae family and is closely related to turmeric, cardamom, and galangal.
Ginger can be used in the form of fresh, dried, powdered, or as an oil or juice. It’s a very common ingredient in recipes. It’s sometimes added to processed foods and cosmetics.
Other uses include pain relief from arthritis, osteoarthritis, menstrual pain, cough, respiratory problems, migraine and diabetes. Ginger is also sometimes used for slow back pain, chest pain, and stomach pain. It is also used to treat bleeding, bacterial bloody diarrhoea, baldness, malaria, poisonous snake bites, and toothaches.
Gingerol is the main bioactive compound in ginger and is used for medicinal properties. According to a study, ginger has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. It has a very long history of use in various forms of traditional and alternative medicine. It is used to aid various problems like digestion, reduce nausea, and help fight the flu and common cold, to name a few of its purposes.
Ginger appears to be highly effective against nausea. It may help relieve nausea and vomiting for people undergoing certain types of surgery. Most clinical research shows that taking 1-1.5 grams of ginger one hour before surgery reduces nausea and vomiting. Ginger may also help with chemotherapy-related nausea.
Although ginger is considered safe if you’re pregnant consult a doctor before taking large amounts. It’s recommended that pregnant women who are close to labour or who’ve had miscarriages avoid ginger.

Ginger has been proven to lower blood sugar levels and improve various heart disease risk factors in people with type 2 diabetes. Taking 2 grams of ginger powder per day lowered blood sugar by 12%. It also increases haemoglobin A1c, a marker for long-term blood sugar levels. HbA1c was reduced by 10% over 12 weeks.

Research shows that taking ginger powder 500-2000 mg during the first 3-4 days of a menstrual cycle can decrease pain in women. Doses were given for 3 days starting at the beginning of the menstrual period. Recent studies have concluded that ginger is more effective than drugs such as mefenamic acid and acetaminophen, ibuprofen etc.
High levels of LDL i.e. bad cholesterol can increase the risk of heart disease. The foods you eat can have a strong influence on LDL levels. In a study, it is proven that taking 5 grams of ginger powder each day can reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol levels over 3 months.
Ginger contains a substance named gingerol, which helps to protect against cancer. The anti-cancer properties are attributed to gingerol, which is found in large amounts in raw ginger. It may be effective against breast cancer and ovarian cancer as well. In general, more research is needed.
