Immunity-The Ayurvedic Notion- MBDH Wellness

Immunity Nov, 2022

Ayurvedic immunity is said to be in an equilibrium state if it possesses the capacity to carry out an adequate response to a challenge from within and from outside.

Nowadays due to an increase in stress, unhealthy lifestyle, processed food intake, and lack of exercise, immunity has been compromised at the individual as well as community level.

The diseases of the immune system arise due to disturbance in Ojas, Kapha, Bala, and Udana Vata.

Classically the rational approach is called amutra and the use of antibiotics & vaccination is called antaranga treatment. The ayurvedic immunological response is called antaranga.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha also referred to as "Indian Ginseng," can be used for building immunity and relieving stress.

Reducing cortisol and boosting the immune system, helps in predicting threats against the human body. Under these conditions, your body is able to take out infections before they start.

Traditionally, ashwagandha has been used to treat a score of medical ailments such as diabetes and hypertension, while research continues today into its anti-tumor abilities.

Ayurveda offers a thoughtful understanding of the concept of immunity and elaborates on how it can be managed.

It proposes multidimensional considerations to decide the effectiveness of resistance such as place and time of birth, the health of the mother during pregnancy, nourishment of the newborn, weather conditions where the individual grows up, types of food consumed, and nature of daily activities.

The spotlight of Ayurveda is on plans for acquiring and enhancing immunity; viz. Rasayana, Vyayama and Satmya. The influence of these aspects on immunity is discussed in this article.

Karma reveals the roots from which many diseases arise though they are not known or clearly visible.

This module is a holistic guide to understanding the body's immunity and strengthening it. It clearly explains how immunological health can be nurtured by adopting an immunity-enhancing lifestyle with indigenous measures.

The module also explains why Ayurvedic medicines are an essential part of the treatment plan in Baladyogas. It provides insight into ‘Ayurvedic theory of disease’, syllabus of pharmaceutical studies, principles of drug design, medicinal plants, formulations, and their uses in treatment plans.

Ayurveda is a complex and wide subject that cannot be curtailed to paragraphs; rather it needs elaborate elucidation and that is what we have done through this module.

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian system of medicine that has been in practice for thousands of years. It is based on the idea that there are five basic elements in the universe, including fire, water, earth, and wind.

These five elements make up everything in the universe, including humans. Each person has a unique combination of these elements within them and this mix is referred to as one's Prakriti or constitution.

According to Ayurvedic doctors (known as Vaidyas), diseases occur when the natural balance of these five elements is disturbed. Infectious diseases are a major health problem all over the world and are responsible for high morbidity and mortality among humans.

In India, more than 50% of deaths occur due to infectious diseases.

The recent development in the microbiological field has led to the discovery of many new pathogens and bacteria.

Identification of causal microorganisms, determining their antimicrobial sensitivity pattern, designing and implementing effective treatment strategies with appropriate antibiotic schedule, providing supportive care, and following strict infection prevention and control measures has become an essential part of health care.
